St Wilfrid's Feast

St Wilfrid's Feast
This *feast celebrates the day that St Wilfrid returned to Ripon, North Yorkshire, from Rome in ad 686, although there is no evidence that it goes anywhere near that far back. The centre of the celebration is the procession on the Saturday before the first Monday in August, led by a man dressed as the saint on a white horse and including bands, morris dancers, and carnival floats. A short service is held at the church, and the saint gives prizes for the best floats. Special Wilfrid pies (cheese and apple) and Wilfra tarts (almonds and lemon) are made and sold in the town.
